Hugh McKinney Hulburt was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, on October 27, 1917. He earned his B.A. at Carroll College in 1938 and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin in 1942. During 1942–1943 as a National Research Fellow studied with Henry Eyring at Princeton. Hulburt taught at Hunter College (1944–1946) and Catholic University (1946–1951).
